Maybe some of the readers were too close to the subject. I sympathized with Harley and it was painful to see what was happening to him and around him. He and his sisters grew up in this situation, and they all reacted to it in different ways. Back Roads is a riveting novel by a formidable new talent. After his mom iced his dad, he was dead and she was in jail, and the task of raising his three younger sisters fell squarely on his shoulders.
Please feel the urgency. Funny and heartbreaking, Tawni O’Dell’s pitch-perfect characters capture the maddening confusion of adolescence and the prickly nature of family with irony and unerring honesty. And of course, it’s brilliant. In fact, this was a really good story.

He didn’t get that bacm from the inciting incident. Not good in terms of characters I loved, and a great adventure or anything like that, but it was good in how it gawni me feel for these characters, even when they were making me sick. Tawni O’Dell is incredibly imaginative and I was easily transported to her coal-mining town setting alongside her colorful characters.

I couldn’t put this book down, which is crazy because it is so disturbing. It contains some very mature topics so if you’re not comfortable reading those then this book really isn’t for you!

Harley’s anger metamorphoses into an almost bloodthirsty lust for his sexy, middle-aged neighbor, which stirs up myriad forbidden family secrets. I was pretty much hooked from the get-go, I immediately felt for Harley and his sisters, their whole situation.
All in all, an amazing book.

One of the most amazing aspects of O’Dell’s writing is that she leads you to draw one conclusion about a character, and tadni slowly feeds you evidence that you’ve misjudged. It’s incredibly dark and morose, but the author does an excellent job taking us into the head of a year-old small town tadni who has been dealt an extremely tough hand–taking care of three sisters after his mother has murdered his father. He didn’t get that way from the inciting incident. In the far past, it’s Dad himself: Family secrets and unspoken truths threaten to consume him as his obsession deepens and she responds unearthing a series of staggering surprises.
