This book probably deserves a higher rating than I’m giving it, but since it fell so short of my expectations I can’t bring myself to rate it any higher.
I was hoping to read in the book about today’s helicopter parenting and some relation to this Guyland phenomena, but did not. While all this is true about much of the men in those age groups.
Basically there is a lot of rage here, and a lot of sour grapes. PROs — many interviews — interesting anecdotes from campus life — a rare book focusing on males and masculinity — Kimmel gives a disclaimer that the book talks only about a small percentage of young men CONs — questionable methodology — despite the disclaimer, the book leads reader to believe that all young men follow the Guy Code — the book stresses negative aspects of masculinity, but it mentions no positive examples, except in a disclaimer and only in regard to ethnic and racial minorities — Kimmel robs women of agency and dismisses them despite a growing body of research indicating that women play an important role in establishing and propagating ideals of masculinity — the book does not hide its strong underlying feminist agenda: If he talked to that many guys, then why on earth are so many of the quotes he gives from other people’s research?

I haven’t read Kimmel’s other works, kkimmel I don’t know if the reviews that state this is somewhat a rehash are correct. Guyland is a compassionate, unflinching dispatch from deep in the heart of young masculinity.
But I would have really loved the author to stretch himself more, to explore many of the ideas that he left hanging, to give us an idea of how we should go about addressing Guyland in our everyday guyladn, with the guys that we know and love.
I could go on and on. This has been on my list for a while and it did not disappoint. If anything, I’m just more disturbed and angry at the white guy culture, and I wish this book touched more on how girls can help other than being a mother and teaching future generations to do better.
But seriously, sentences like this: Of course, as any guy who’s gotten past guyland can tell them, of course that doesn’t make you happy. Parents need to speak up and not coddle their children, and all the adults certainly need to tell college guys and girls that hazing and sexual assaults are not tolerated, and support whistle blowers who dare to speak up.
In light of that, I think that it could have been better than it was. Occupied by young, single, white men, its main demographic is middle class kids who are college-bound, college co-eds, or recent graduates in the United States. It is not an objective academic research — Kimmel needs a better editor: While Guyalnd understand that Kimmel is trying to describe a norm, I would like kikmel have read more about counter-cultural attitudes about masculinity.
Binge drinking and partying all weekend are common behaviors, both in college and beyond. Thankfully, Kimmel never resorts to simply speaking of how awful the next generation of young men is nor does he let young men off the hook. Instead of looking for acceptance and support from a network of parents, teachers, coaches, good friends or pastors, most rites of passage for young men are done amongst peers. It’s currently and the economic situation is crappy for everyone, including young people, not just “guys”. The book is full of unnecessary repetitions I would not rely on this book as a comprehensive overview of young adult male culture. Kimmel is easy reading, and he explains concepts well like I said above, one of his earlier books has been a very effective textbook for me.
The critique of Guyland includes a laundry list of offensive behaviors and attitudes. It’s time to grow up kids.
